Green Woodworking / Country Woodcraft Techniques
This Forum is the place to discuss the concept of green
woodworking (basically, techniques and reasons for
getting woodworking materials directly from a log instead
of kiln dried lumber from a commercial supplier.)
Traditional methods such as riving, shaving and bending
wood are included in this forum. It is also the forum to
discuss green woodworking tools (drawknives,
spokeshaves, hewing, etc.) and equipment (shaving horses,
workbench setups, etc.) Specialty tools (such as tapered
reamers for Windsor chairmaking) will be found in the
appropriate forum. This forum will also include basic wood
technology (discussion of moisture content, differential
shrinkage, etc.)

Post-and-Rung Chairmaking
Sometimes called “ladderbacks”, this forum deals with the
design and construction of chairs that generally utilize
vertical posts with horizontal rungs, cylindrical mortise and
tenon joinery, and a seating surface that is woven across
the upper horizontal rungs. This forum covers both thrown
(turned) and shave p-&-r chairmaking, including rockers.
Various seating materials and weaving methods are also in
this category.

Windsor Chairmaking
This forum includes questions and commentary about all
kinds of Windsors – classic American styles, the very
diverse Windsors found in England, and rustic Windsors
(also called stick chairs, vernacular Windsors and folk art
Windsors.) The discussion includes chairmaking history,
materials, styles and steps in construction (shaving
spindles, shaping and bending bows, saddling seats,
turning legs and stretchers, joinery and finishing.) Dealing
with the various compound angles is also part of this
discussion.

Treenware / House and Farm Woodenware
‘Treenware’ refers to household spoons, ladles, bowls and
serving containers. These are commonly carved from green
wood, and given a natural oil finish. The Forum also
includes other hand-crafted wooden items, such as
bentwood pitchforks and firewood carriers, hay rakes,
wooden door and cabinet hinges and latches, etc.

Coopering
Here’s a forum to discuss one of the most exacting
traditional crafts, the making of staved barrels, tubs and
buckets. The moderator (Drew Langsner) apprenticed to
Swiss master cooper Ruedi Kohler in 1972.

Japanese Woodworking
Country Workshops has offered courses in Japanese
Woodworking (with Carl Swensson as instructor) since
1983. Post questions and commentary on selection, tuning
and use of Japanese woodworking tools, along with
traditional Japanese woodworking techniques. Many
western woodworkers have selectively borrowed tools and
techniques from this ancient tradition.

Aesthetics and Philosophy of Craft and Art
In this forum we discuss the relationship of art and craft,
form and function, the role of the handmade objects and
the craftsman in society, etc. It’s also a place to discuss
‘craftsmanship of risk versus craftsmanship of certainty’
(from David Pye) and ideas such as the Japanese concepts
of shibui (ultimate beauty) and getemono (the natural
beauty in common, handmade objects.)
